The same happened to me with a quilt I had planned for my granddaughter's graduation this June. Last Fall, after attending a local quilt show, we stopped by a quilt store that had a good discount the day of the quilt show. In the store my gd saw a quilt displayed that she said she liked - out of material that is totally out of my comfort zone! I showed her a book with the quilt I had planned and she said she didn't like it! Long story short - we bought material like the display quilt; the quilt is now with the longarm quilter and my gd will have the quilt she wants for her grad! She is our 1st gc so I wanted her to be pleased with her quilt.
