Some models of Janome require an "ankle" to adjust to fit the walking foot. I am unfamiliar with the model you have, but have worked with several models that need the ankle to adapt for the walking foot.
Also you may have outgrown the capability of your machine, which may be why the dealer suggested upgrading. With each upgrade, the tasks become easier.
