Your quilt is beautiful! I'm sure you'll be happier once you redo the borders.
I've had good luck doing mine the way Bonnie recommends on her Quiltville site:

She doesn't use a measuring tape, she smooths out the quilt, then the borders in the center, pins to anchor and trims them up. Seems to work well for me!
