If the needle a universal needle, you might try an embroidery needle. If you are using an embroidery needle, I would try a different one, maybe the one you picked out is defective.
If you are sewing with poly or poly cotton, try 100% cotton.
You could also change to a smaller needle and 60 wt 3ply or 2 ply thread.
