I am doing machine applique for the first time and on the backing material I am getting "holes"

I am using a #11 needle

Is this normal ? What else can I try ,I did put in another needle same results . I have the Brother CS6000i

it is just the holes from the needle going through...quite normal. after washing those holes will close up pretty well...but they are normal.

Its not because the fabric is too thin ? I am using Quilters Cotton from Joanns

Sharon, your first photo showed a stitch that digs into the same hole several times to make the stitch. The second photo with a softer stitch works well.

I don't want to blame the thinness of the JA fabric (even though if you could count the threads in an inch, there might be less than 120). How heavy is the fusible you are using? How close our your stitches? And the stitch you choose first makes many downward movements to broaden the hole in the stitch. CK Cowl might be right - washing might tighten the grains around the sewing machine thread.

I would choose a different stitch though. And I would make the stitches further apart.

Are you using the correct size needle? A needle used for heavier weight fabrics would leave a larger hole, also I use a brand new needle when starting out on a delicate project such a this.

I like the more softer delicate look of the stitch in pic No2.

The first stitch looks like the needle is hitting in the same hole 4 times, so the hole it leaves will be more noticeable than the second stitch you chose.
I think they will be fine with the second stitch :D:D:D
