I have rescued two, a cocker spaniel and a mutt/sheltie mix. Both were under 20 pounds, both non-barkers, never hurt anything in the house, and loved to be in the car. Both were also "specia needs" My cocker was blind (she died in 07) and my sheltie has epilepsy (seizure disorder). Both were/are "family," and I love/d them to pieces. Good luck with your search.
