Did you keep the layers taut when you put together your sandwich? A taught assembly of the 3 layers and a good basting system (I baste with pins about hand-width apart) tends to get the job done.
ALl things quilty take a bit of getting used to. Don't fret if your first one won't be a master piece - you are still working out the kinks.
