We had to iron my dad's boxers and handerchiefs when we were kids. We also used an old roller iron that you sat in a chair and operated. Did sheets, pillowcases.....ironed just about anything cotton. Thank goodness for poly-cotton now :-)
Sounds like an old Ironrite. I sit to do my ironing. A mangle is a "roller iron" . Takes only about 30 minutes a week to do everything. Nothing beats the Ironrite for performance. I bought this one from Craigslist several years ago. Two years ago I found another in a yard sale not far from my home. I bought it immediately for spare parts. Cost only 20 bucks and I've never had to use any of it. The original one I bought just goes and goes. I just love it and I wouldn't trade my 100 perscent cotton sheets and napkins for any poly cotton ever.

I have a really nice Laura Star iron now, one that my hubby brought me from Germany. Oh my word, do I love that iron. Best quilting iron in town. I don't iron anything else with it but my sewing projects.
