Actually, there's not much waste if you mark the die blades and position your fabric accordingly. One of my strip cutters, for example, will cut 5 strips at a time width-of-fabric, and my waste will be only two 1/4-wide strips. This is at least as good as what I can do by hand. Many of the video demonstrations use excess fabric so they don't have to take the time to position the fabric on the die blades; they just want to show how it works.
