re: quilting ties - I use the length of my index finger up to the first knuckle for my measure to cut after I have tied them.
I figure back in the day (another century) they did not have all our tools. When I made clothing for my daughter (She is now 50.) I used my little finger as a measure between hemming stitches. This gave an evenness to the hems. For adult hems I use my thumb width.

Love your quilt.
How cool! Appreciate the tip on measuring the ties! I see a few evenings spent replacing the ties starting tonight! A few were left longer and they really look better - washed up well, too.
