I have the Quantum L-500. I don't hear a noise. Are you using the original needle? Maybe the needle is dull--try changing it. Also, check out your bobbin case to see if it needs cleaning.
I've used Singers all my life and haven't had a problem. Singer's have gotten a rep over the years but I think it's because the folks that have had problems speak louder than the ones that have not.
