It depends on your price range. Sears Kenmore machines offer good value for money.
Like I said...Kenmore has great machines for the money. They are made by Janome. :)

I think everyone has a favorite brand of machine, what works for one might not work for someone else. I have a Singer Heavy Duty that I bought a year ago and it works great. At least I can clean it by myself. I would personally rather buy a cheaper machine and have more money for fabric. I quilt by hand so that might make a difference.

I've used Singers all my life and haven't had a problem. Singer's have gotten a rep over the years but I think it's because the folks that have had problems speak louder than the ones that have not.
Agreed! I have one that's only a couple of years old, and perfect.

Singer 221 featherweights are vintage machines. Vintage Singers are collectible because of their high quality; however, they do not have the modern features that many quilters like -- such as needle up/down, embroidery stitches, etc.

Have you tried changing your needle. A dull needle makes a loud noise when you are sewing several layers.

Since HSN offers a 30 day money back guarantee, I would send it back and get a refund. Kenmores are decent machines for the price you pay. I have one I keep as a spare to take to workshops and in case my Bernina starts acting up (which she never does). Bernina and I have had a love affair going on for 10 years now.

Pfaff and I used to have a love affair until I bought the 2058 and we simply do not get along. That is when I test drove and returned the Singer L-500. In the end, I bought a Babylock Espire (similar to the Symphony) and I lovelovelove my machine. We are soooooo compatible. I would recommend her for a test drive but I hear that the other Babylocks are really good too. ("Quilla" is a bit pricey)

I own a Kenmore that I bought 6 years ago. Never had a problem with it. I think Kenmore is made by Janome.
