I think everyone has a favorite brand of machine, what works for one might not work for someone else. I have a Singer Heavy Duty that I bought a year ago and it works great. At least I can clean it by myself. I would personally rather buy a cheaper machine and have more money for fabric. I quilt by hand so that might make a difference.
