Unfortunately, Singer does not produce quality machines like they use to. I would never buy a new one. If you can send it back, that's what I'd do, and get your money back.
I have a friend that buys nothing but Kenmore's and loves them. They are made by Janome and has everything that a Janome does...except the price.
