I find books by Eleanor Burns very easy to follow. If she has any patterns you like, you might want to try one. Her Trip Around the World could be a good beginner quilt.
Quilt in a Day Log Cabin Book is a nice beginner quilt book.
Fons and Porter Complete Guide - wonderful reference book and has projects. Kind of like many beginner quilters classes but in a book. If you buy one book this is the best $8 spend.
