Fons and Porter Complete Guide - wonderful reference book and has projects. Kind of like many beginner quilters classes but in a book. If you buy one book this is the best $8 spend.

Good lighting is important. I have a simple pole lamp with three adjustable light fixtures. I work in a small space so it is easy to drag the thing around. I put it right next to my cutting table and aim them at my fabric. But a goose-necked desk lamp would do also. Whatever might work for your particular setup and your pocketbook. Lots of quilters have Ott lights and swear by them.
Painters tape will be helpful when it's time to sandwich your quilt, and can be used on your sewing machine to guarantee a 1/4" seam.
And don't forget Batting! :-)

My favorite rulers have the 1/8", 1/4", 1/2" and 1" markings in different colors....BIG help for these old eyes.
Eleanor Burns books are the best for beginners.
and I agree -- do NOT be afraid to ask the quilters or staff in the LQS for help. Use your best judgement for what you can afford --- some of those things are not all that NECESSARY -- just helpful. Remember, or foremothers used just scissors and needles.

Ott Light if lighting is an issue for you. Can be purchased inexpensively from Joann's when they have a sale.
Painter's Tape can also be used to remind yourself that a block is a little off and needs to be fixed or carefully sashed later. You just put a little piece of tape on the block.
A spur of the moment fat quarter collection purchase. Fun!
