Any 30's fabric will work; the ones you show are fine
Since the blocks aren't small, I think a 9-patch would look good.
I'd probably mix in 30's solids with the prints
Wouldn't that basically be a snowball block?
Also, you could consider making the embroidered blocks into an arrowhead (triangle of 30s fabric sewn into opposing sides). Gives you a secondary design in the corners alternating with the 9-patch block. Much easier than it sounds. Clear as mud, right.
