My best, handiest and most useful tool is a bamboo shish-ka-bob stick. It keeps my fingers out of the way of the needle and I use it to guide the fabric close to the needle so it doesn't slip towards the end. Cheap too. My 2nd best tool - tweezers.
Me too, that's what I use. I give them to my students too. I mean how cheap can something be.
