I just found that the office desk lamp that has places for pencils and other compartments to it that I had works great for a light and that my small scissors and snips and even my small magnetic pins fit in the slots great and are handy at my side in stead of everywhere.

What a great thread. I've found the english equivalent of the suction cup lifter on e-bay for £4.99- as you said, much cheaper than 'quilter' ones. I have a bias making thingy but can't work out how to use it. Can't get the fabric to go through (prob me being thick).
Great ideas everyone.

My fav is a mechanics part tray. Picked it up at a parts store for 3 bucks. Its round, about 6inches in diameter and the entire bottom is a HUGE magnet. I can put my heavy Ginghers in the tray turn it upside down and the scissors wont fall out the magnet is so strong. Have it on the end of my ironing board and drop my pins as I press. Have to keep it far far away from my machine! Love paper clips too, have them taped all over my machine so I can thread specialty threads in different directions for the best results.

My favorite tool would have to be a spinning utensil thingy I got from Pampered Chef. It's white plastic and has different compartments in 2 rows. I keep all my scissors, pens and pencils, seam gauge, 12" ruler, stiletto, etc... in it. It's right by my machine and I can just spin it around to get what I need. I actually have 2 of them.
