EmbLibrary.com has a Help section which explains this so much better than I can. They also have a list of many different machines and their stitching limitations.

Have fun!
I have been machine embroidering for quite a few years and have never heard that machines have a stich limit. According to the Embroidery/Library it is notably the Janome and Babylock that have a known limit of 65,000 stitches on any design they can read. I have a Bernina and have never come across a design that could not be read. Nor has anyone in our embroidery club had problems, Bernina, Babylock, etc. Maybe because 65,000 stitches would be an exceptionally large design.
So stitch away.
