A barn quilt was originally painted right on the barns around the areas. Now the quilt guilds are making them on outdoor plywood and selling them to make extra money for different things. I make mine 3 x 3 and they get hung on our cabins in our little mountain development. Everyone loves them. I try and fit the quilt block to he people that live there.
