My youngest dog does that! We think she wakes up and can't go back to sleep and is bored, so she sits at our door and whines. Couple times I have left her outside all night. They have a heated doghouse so even if its snowing, she is fine. Seems like when we do that a couple nights in a row, she tends to sleep thru the night! :-)
