Although I now have a Husqvarna Viking which I love, for the price range you want--I do recommend Sears Kenmore machines. My husband bought me one when our daughter was 6 months old and I still have it & it works just fine. My grandaughter is now learning on it. It is sturdy, easy to use and does both piecing and quilting wonderfully. Just make sure to get the quilting needles to do the quilting and use the regular ones for piecing.
