Onions have allicin, an anti-microbial/antifungal, that's why it often works "like" an antibiotic.

By the way, "candles" for ears is also an ancient remedy. They are not actually candles because they are hollow tubes, but one does light the end of them and the flame creates warmth which tends to draw unwanted substances (wax) up out of the ear into the tube.
