Acuquilt has started daily deals to encourage customers to buy sets. That may be the way to go.
Also sometimes you can find sales at JoAnns or the like.
I use my for applique for children's quilts, bibs etc. Yes you have to make a lot to justify the price, but you can cut multiples.
