Yes they are magnifying. They have a heavy base so they don't fall over and a gooseneck so I can put the light anywhere I need it. Someone posted her lamp was flimsy and she couldn't pick it up to move it and it was top heavy. Mine is not like that at all. The needlework shop where I bought the lamps sells them already put together so I was able to try one out before buying. I can sit comfortably and have the lamp right over my sewing. I use when I do machine quilting. I can see every stitch. One bonus is that it can run off batteries or electric power.

Wanted to add the frames made by Harry Barnett are excellent quality.
