I'm trying to figure out what the sheer ones were used for. It seems that they would be awfully hard to keep intact with so much washing, and I thought the reason for aprons was to keep the clothes under it clean.
I wondered at that too, but my guess would be that they were used when serving a nice meal. More decorative than functional. Kind of like dressing up.
