Maybe someone was on their way to the hospital to have it reattached? That is very weird. Worse yet, something weirder like some violence etc. I'd have called the police! In either case, if the person missing it were at the hospital - they'd need it in a certain amount of time to ensure reattachment was possible! OUCH! That's certainly an oddity to your day...
