I pin religiously using the curved safety pins and the wooden (Handiquilter?) tool designed to make pinning easier. When I FMQ I'm not usually following a marked pattern so I just "freely" go around in-the-way pins.

That said, I was introduced to using spray basting on a lap quilt by my LQS. Wow! I returned the favor by suggesting the method of spraying the layers together using the design wall, ala the YouTube tutorial. We had to use a couple of safety pins to make sure the sandwich didn't separate when we took it off the wall but the whole process was quick & easier!! We both learned something that day.
