I have used vinegar to remove odor. We have a whole zoo of pets in our house, ranging from dogs to sugar gliders to cockatoos, and the vinegar is the only thing that gets the odor out of their cloth toys.
I never thought to use ammonia! So glad it worked for you... now I am going to give it a try.
