I had posted on here about musty fabric I had bought at thrift store. I bought quite a bit and thought I would have to toss it. Someone suggested I put ammonia in the wash. I tried almost everything else so gaveit a try. Guess what ? It worked!!!!!!
Thank you!!

how much ammonia did you add to the washtub?

did you use it alone or in combination with detergent?

I've been putting ammonia in with all my wash since I read that thread. I use 1/4 cup along with my detergent... :)

I wash all my smelly fabric in 1 cup of vinger and small amount of fabric softner in wash cycle, no soap. The rinse cycle takes out the fabric softener. Smells like new.

I have used vinegar to remove odor. We have a whole zoo of pets in our house, ranging from dogs to sugar gliders to cockatoos, and the vinegar is the only thing that gets the odor out of their cloth toys.

I never thought to use ammonia! So glad it worked for you... now I am going to give it a try.

I had some mildewed blue jeans from one of the kids, just HORRID smelling. Used everything, and nothing worked til my Mom said use amonia. A cheap solution, too!

Great Idea! Just wondering if this would work with cigarette smell that has permeated in quilts?

Thanks for letting us know. I was given bags of fabric and I could not get the smell out. I was heart broken I coulds not use it. That was a year ago. I will try this if I come across smelly fabric again. :XD:
