I have used Steam a Seam 2. The edges won't fray they say and I haven't had any problem so far. Also, I saw on Fons and Porter where they cut out the applique and then trim the middle of the paper pattern out and leave only the edge to cover the edge of the applique so it won't be so stiff after sewing it down.
