Wash him often with a good dog shampoo, every week for a while - should take the smell away and not irritate the dog's skin. Rinse well! Keep him on a short leash for a while after the bath while he is drying. He thinks that his "stinky" smell is lovely, so try to keep him from rolling in his favorite stinky-pile while he is still damp.
Retrievers are bred to '"retrieve" ducks from the water every day! He might enjoy the bath.
