Mom didn't bake much. We farmed so she was outside most of the time. I learned to bake by following a recipe. Grandma, on the other hand, baked a lot. She never measured anything. It was a pinch of this and a handful of that and whatever she made was so good! She made a German chocolate cake from scratch that would melt in you mouth.
