Most of my quilts I give away to charities, so I use whatever I have. I find bedding at gr sales at great prices. The more I save on materials the more quilts I can make for someone who otherwise wouldn't have a blanket.
I know of a case where the family used newspapers between blankets just to keep warm.
I know of another place where the kids slept on the floor without a blanket or pillow, so that is why I want to make as many as I can to give away. I feel so blessed to be able to give to those who have so much less.
