(I believe I had 12 inch blocks) I sewed these together and then added a small border. I just stitched in the ditch around the pictures and borders and stippled the background. I don't have a picture handy, but it came out really nice.
I did something similar to this. The photos were all different sizes, bordered in 3" fabrics that were all different. Pulled it together with a beautiful green....turned out gorgeous! No pattern involved :-D
