I have any personal experience with Kenmores, but many of them ate made by Janome and they seem to have a good reputation of quality at a budget price. I DO have a Brother HS 2000 which should go for $200 or less and really impresses me for that price. You can read machine reviews on patternreview.com. SO helpful. But a used Bernina would be the best, IMO, if you can find one. Lots of options at your price. If you are overwhelmed and don't have time to shop carefully, can you borrow a machine? I have several, and I know it's not uncommo. I have loaned out all but my $$$ faves.
