I'm a newbie, only been quilting a year. I've learned and am still learning a lot about purchasing kits. For one thing, only the exact amount of material is included, no extra for any mistakes. Also, the material can't be pre-washed because if it shrinks any at all, you won't have the amount of material needed. The same thing applies if it includes or calls for fat quarters or charm packs. Can't be pre-washed because of shrinkage. I've seen some gorgeous kits but don't buy!
