Regarding the silk, I have used this in a landscape quilt posted here http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-75461-1.htm - you see it most clearly in the second picture. If you tease it out and lay it on greaseproof paper then spritz it with water, lay more paper over the top and press it with a dry iron, you get a filmy sheet of loveliness that can then be FMQd onto a fabric background. It wouldn't be washable obviously but it's fabulous for a wallhanging.
