Don't be intimidated by non- computerised sewing machine. That is what I use and it does the better quilting, Try to get a single stitch hole plate for quilting, as you will get a better stitch, lower your feed dogs and just do an all - over meandering stipple until you get confident. I have a practice sandwich for every quilt that I do and I start with it, to make sure the tension is right and to get myself into the swing of things. I usually spend about 10mins warming up and then get into it with the real quilt.
You will get better as you go and don't bother to fix up the first stuff as it will be unnoticeable amongst the overall design.
The thing you most need is confidence - not fancy gadgets. All the best.
