I made one years ago using squares lined up to make rows (on an angle of the same color if that is as clear as mud) I used 5 colors combinations (and numbered them 1 - 5 then started out sewing them together starting row 1 with #1 then 2nd row with #2 and continue, after #5 start back to 1 make the rows as long as you think you want your skirt to be. When i had a big square sewn together i cut out a circle by folding into a big triangle and trimming to circle. When you have a circle fold it in half and cut halfway through to make opening to put around tree. Put batting and backing together with a wide lace inbetween and sewed it like an envelope quilt leaving a space to turn. I tied this as at the time i didn't know how to quilt. Don't know if this has helped but i love mine and have used it for about 30 years, getting a little worn but still looks ok.
