Personally, I really don't think the pattern itself is going to dictate how "manly" or "girlie" a quilt is. It's going to be in the fabric. I think the pattern is secondary in this case. It sounds to me like he's quite the gardener and loves flowers and plants, so I don't think you can go wrong with florals. I'm anxious to see what you come up with. I'm sure he's going to LOVE whatever you come up with. He sounds like a very kind and gererous man. I did like the idea of a Carpenter's Star. Just my opinion.
