Roxanne, I am doing "invisible machine appliqué" , also heard it called "mock hand applique", I cut heat resistant templates, cut my pieces with some seam allowance, and then use starch and heat to turn the edges under the template, take the template out and stitch the prepared piece with a blind hem stitch using invisible thread.
Thanks Candi. This is a method I haven't tried. Being new to applique, I am searching for the "one" that works for me. Right now, I'm tracing my pattern on both my fabric piece and background and matching points before hemming. The freezer paper didn't work too well for me as my pieces kept getting a little larger than the image.

Your work looks perfect, I aspire to have mine look as good.
