since it is your first quilt, i suggest something simple in straight lines. Check out the stencils from one of the copanies that mfg and sell stencils. There are many border designs using straight and/or diagonal lines. This would be easier than trying to do something more decorative. Or you could mark diagonal lines from angles in your center patchwork.
