I am soooo close to finishing my first quilt. I love it!!!!!

So, my top is finished and I am almost finished quilting it. I am quilting it by machine and doing stitch in the ditch, so I am just following the lines. (Disappearing Nine Patch). Anyway, I have two borders on it, the first is easy, just stitched in the ditch around it. The second border is wide enough that I need to do something.

So, what should I do? Should I just quilt straight lines (Straight lines, as in horizontal, vertical, or diagonal) or should I quilt an easy design? Remember, this is my first project.

    Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would buy a stencil, mark it and then quilt it. It adds so much to the border imo.

since it is your first quilt, i suggest something simple in straight lines. Check out the stencils from one of the copanies that mfg and sell stencils. There are many border designs using straight and/or diagonal lines. This would be easier than trying to do something more decorative. Or you could mark diagonal lines from angles in your center patchwork.

I would make some kind of design in the border. That makes it stand out.

does your sewing machine have a decorative stitch? mine has a wavy stitch, so I can do a straight line but it stitches it curvy for me lol

    Bernina #4?? My favorite stitch.

@Deb, I agree with the others. Straights lines would be easiest. If you'll feeling a bit adventurous, maybe sew them diagonally to make them a bit different. And if you have access to that wavy stitch, it's the best!

Please post pictures when you're done.

    And Welcome!

Practice on something smaller if you choose to do a design for the first time- you don't want to ruin your quilt (or cause hours of un-sewing because you (got ahead of yourself) practice first

I made a quilt for my mom that I did SID quilting on the top and for the wider border I just used a simple piano keys type stitch - it looks really nice hanging on her bed with the quilting lines running straight down.
