This is how I do my borders. I quilt the entire main body of the quilt, then add the borders, quilting as I go. FMQing a large quilt without the borders really reduces the size and makes it do-able, then when you add the borders, there's just that narrow piece on your machine, with the bulk of the quilt to the left of the machine.
