    Here's a tut about a way to quilt as you go that uses a one-piece backing. It's sort of like paper piecing, but the vertical rows are "pieces" and the backing and batting are "paper" (You don't have to tear it off when finished, though!). Rather clever, I think.

    I've done that with table runners with jelly rolls...so fast and easy you can have a runner in 1/2...see photo

    This is how I do my borders. I quilt the entire main body of the quilt, then add the borders, quilting as I go. FMQing a large quilt without the borders really reduces the size and makes it do-able, then when you add the borders, there's just that narrow piece on your machine, with the bulk of the quilt to the left of the machine.
