I would let her pay for the fabric and thread atleast, and then if she wanted to give you something for your time, it would be her choice. I have done quilts for various family members this way. My sister always doubles the price of fabric, my brother paid for the fabric and gave me a gift certificate for a LQS, and another brother just paid for the fabric. It is difficult when making commissioned quilts for family, so, as long as they pay for the fabric...I'm good to go. As far as my kids go...as long as it is for them and not outside the family, I don't charge them. They ask for specific things once in a while, but not often, so it usually ends up being a gift of love.
