I did a Postage Stamp quilt that used a print JR and a Solid. As a beginner, I liked that the hard part (cutting straight!) was already done for me; so that I could focus my time on sewing a nice straight 1/4" seam...
Nowadays I can cut fairly straight, so yeah, I would probably just go with some solid yardage on sale rather than a JR....
