At this point in my life - I avoid most precuts - because:

I am fanatical about washing fabrics before cutting them.

(I am aware that many people feel no need to do the "wash/shrink before cutting" step -however, from my limited experience, it is imperative to do so)

I did a Postage Stamp quilt that used a print JR and a Solid. As a beginner, I liked that the hard part (cutting straight!) was already done for me; so that I could focus my time on sewing a nice straight 1/4" seam...
Nowadays I can cut fairly straight, so yeah, I would probably just go with some solid yardage on sale rather than a JR....

REMEMBER folks!!! The OP is not questioning precuts....only asking why someone would purchase a precut of the same color. This shouldn't turn into a debate about why you like precuts or not. They're are ton of threads on this already!

I buy them to have a bit of variety. I have used them to do tube quilts...much quicker than waiting to have fabric cut at LQS (my most impatient time). And they are cute on my shelf...the first thing everyone goes to in my sewing room; then they start with the fat quarter stacks. It's fabric, what can I say!!

I work 50-60 hours a week. I only have the weekend - and often only a few hours a day during that weekend - to sew. I refuse to waste one moment cutting fabric if I don't have to. Yes, jelly rolls are more expensive, but they're also a huge time-saver for me, so they're more than worth the money.
